Job summary

We are seeking an Engineer in Training (EIT) to contribute to Lydium’s portfolio of technology development projects for our industrial startup clients. Working under the supervision of Senior and Intermediate Engineers, you will assist with the design of pilot- and demonstration-scale plants, participate in on-site commissioning and operational activities, and provide on-the-ground and remote process and data analysis support during pilot campaign operations. You will also assist with techno-economic analysis (TEA) activities for our earlier-stage clients, including process design, process modelling, financial modelling, and technology/commercial landscape reviews.

We strive to integrate our EITs into hands-on, on-site projects so that they can get maximum exposure to the exciting work being done by our clients.  If you are assigned to one of these projects, a substantial amount of travel may be required, especially when our clients are implementing major design or operational changes.

To succeed in this role, you must bring a combination of technical expertise, project engineering skills, interpersonal skills, a strong aptitude for data analysis, and enthusiasm for gaining hands-on operational experience. You must be flexible, intellectually agile, and possess a good sense of humour to work effectively in a fast-paced, client-facing environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in the design and engineering of chemical pilot plants, including process design, mechanical design, instrumentation and controls, equipment selection, and layout optimization.
  • Provide engineering support to Lydium’s “in the field” projects during the construction, commissioning, and execution phases. Duties could include revising engineering documents and drawings to their “as built” state, performing design calculations to support field changes, assembling data books, assisting with the preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), performing document control, and assisting with the collection and analysis of data.
  • Support techno-economic analysis (TEA) for our clients’ innovative process technology concepts, including “idea-phase analysis”, technical and commercial landscape reviews, discounted cash flow financial models, examining relevant standards and specifications, and technical trade-off studies.
  • Support senior engineers to build and maintain thermochemical process models and data analysis frameworks using a variety of software tools (Aspen Plus, gPROMS, SysCAD, Excel, Python, etc.).
  • Travel to project sites as needed, including longer-term visits (multiple weeks) during periods of high activity.
  • Participate in Lydium’s internal project and product development initiatives.

Required qualifications

  • Undergraduate Engineering degree from an accredited university.
  • Registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with EGBC, PEO, or other equivalent provincial body.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Eligible to work without restriction in Canada.
  • Eligible to travel for business without restriction within Canada, the United States, and internationally (visa support will be provided if needed).
  • Advanced-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Expert-level proficiency in verbal and written English.

Additional qualifications (asset)

  • Private industry work experience (non-university) supporting the design or deployment of a chemical or metallurgical process technology.
  • Applied research and development experience related to a chemical or metallurgical process technology.
  • Hands-on experience using tools to assemble, build, repair, or operate equipment.
  • Programming experience in Python, process simulation, or other similar data analysis tool.
  • Experience working with PLCs, HMIs, and or SCADA systems and their programming.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint and software automation workflows.

Compensation and benefits

  • Competitive salary based on qualifications.
  • Eligibility for profit-sharing bonuses.
  • Flexible healthcare spending account (HSA) covering health, dental, vision, and paramedical services.
  • Cell phone allowance for employees who travel.
  • Opportunities for professional development and career growth.
